The Cave of the Women – A Journey into the Prehistoric Realm

The Muierilor Cave is one of the most famous caves in Romania, located in Baia de Fier, Gorj County. It is a spectacular cave, both geologically and historically, being one of the most visited caves in the country.

General features:

Total length: approximately 7 km Altitude: 700 m

Average temperature: 9-12°C

Accessibility: The cave has a tourist route of approximately 1 km, equipped with walkways and artificial lighting.

There are two versions that, according to the locals, would be the basis for the name of the cave with the name "Women's". The first says that in the historical past, when the smoke of the alarm fires called the men in power to defend the country from invaders who came from nowhere, the women would quickly take the children and the elderly to take shelter in the cave known only to them at that time, where they would remain hidden until the plague passed. The second version claims that the name Women's Cave comes from the fact that on dry days of summer drought, more fierce on the limestone than in other parts, the women would sit down to spin wool at the mouth of the cave cavity, where the air that blew from inside it would have made their work of twisting the thread much easier. Some claim that they used to penetrate even further inland where, in the mouths of water, they would put flax and hemp to melt

The Women's Cave is shrouded in several mysteries and legends, due to archaeological discoveries, bizarre formations, and long history.

1. Ancient human skullA possible hybrid human?

A 30,000-year-old human skull was discovered in the Women's Cave, raising many questions. Analyses have shown that it belongs to a woman who had mixed features between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. This fuels the theory that there was interbreeding between the species.

2. Cave bear tracks and mysterious disappearance In one of the cave's galleries, hundreds of bones of Ursus spelaeus, a species of cave bear that became extinct 15,000 years ago, were found. Researchers believe that these bears were either trapped in the cave or hunted by primitive humans, but some hypotheses also suggest a possible sacrificial ritual.

3. The mysterious energy in the cave

Many visitors claim to feel a special energy in certain areas of the cave, especially in the Altar Hall. Some believe it could be natural electromagnetic fields that influence people's perceptions.

4. Legends of ghosts and spirits

Locals say the cave is haunted by the spirits of women who hid here in the past but never came out. Some tourists have reported strange sounds or unexplained sensations in certain sections of the cave.

5. Secret tunnels and galleries

Although the tourist route is well laid out, there are also passages that are difficult to access or completely unknown. It is said that some unexplored galleries could hide new discoveries, fossils or even ancient artifacts.

The Muierilor Cave is open to tourists and guided tours are available. It is an ideal destination for speleology and nature lovers, being located in a picturesque area of Oltenia.
